It is a special season of ecumenical solidarity in which we come together as followers of Christ and as one human family from around the globe, sharing a common call to care for Creation. We remember that we are part of the wider web of life in our world and part of all that God has made – both human and other than human. We remember that our well-being is interwoven with the well-being of the whole Earth.
Let us rejoice in this opportunity to participate in safeguarding our common home and all beings who share it. Let us actively celebrate God as Creator and acknowledge Creation as the wonderful, awe-inspiring, still unfolding divine act which summons us as co-creators to love and care for the gift of life on our beautiful planet Earth.
This year, the theme for the season is ‘Peace with Creation’.
The Hebrew word for peace is ‘shalom’. Shalom comes from the root verb meaning to be complete, perfect and full. Hebrew words go beyond just their spoken pronunciation. Each word seeks to also convey feeling, intent and emotion. Shalom means completeness, wholeness, health, peace, welfare, safety, soundness, tranquillity, prosperity, perfectness, fullness, rest, harmony, the absence of agitation or discord. Shalom is more than just simply peace – it is complete peace, a state of total well-being and harmony.
